Iowa and Iowa State first played in 1894, but the series stopped after Iowa State's 31-6 win in 1934. Iowa coach Ossie Solem would not return calls to schedule more games, and the teams did not meet again for 43 years.
When the rivalry was set to resume in 1977, a group of Des Moines sports fans who had graduated from both schools called themselves the Greater Des Moines Athletic Club and paid for a traveling trophy themselves.
Iowa Governor Robert D. Ray presented the first Cy-Hawk Trophy after the renewed game on Sept. 17, 1977, at Kinnick Stadium, where Iowa won 12-10.
In 2011 the Iowa Corn Growers Association replaced the original with a sculpture of a farm family huddled around a bushel of corn. It was so widely mocked that the association dropped it within days, used a temporary trophy that season, and unveiled a redesign based on fan input after the 2012 game.
The trophy itself. The current trophy, in use since 2012, shows the two schools' mascots (Iowa State's Cy the Cardinal and Iowa's Herky the Hawk) with a raised football and corn in the background. The original 1977-2010 version showed a football, a running back in a stiff-arm pose, and likenesses of Cy and Herky.

The Cy-Hawk game went unplayed for 43 years (1935-1976), and the trophy was created specifically to celebrate the series coming back in 1977.
