Tension ran high before the 1935 game because Iowa fans were still angry about the 1934 meeting, in which Minnesota players roughed up Hawkeye star halfback Ozzie Simmons, one of the few Black players in the game at the time, until he had to leave injured.
With the pregame talk heating up, Minnesota Governor Floyd B. Olson tried to cool things down by telegramming Iowa Governor Clyde L. Herring a friendly bet: a Minnesota prize hog against an Iowa prize hog on the outcome.
Minnesota won the November 9, 1935 game in Iowa City 13-6, and it was played cleanly. Herring paid up with a prize hog donated by Allen Loomis of Rosedale Farms near Fort Dodge, Iowa, named the animal Floyd after the Minnesota governor, and personally walked it into Olson's office in St. Paul.
Olson gave the live pig away as the prize in a statewide essay contest. The winner handed it to the University of Minnesota, which sold it for about $50 to the Gjerdrum family's farm in southeastern Minnesota, where it died of hog cholera in 1936.
To keep the wager alive, Olson commissioned sculptor Charles Brioschi to cast Floyd's likeness in bronze, and that statue has been the traveling trophy ever since.
