How football squares work

  1. Sell the squares. A grid has 100 squares. Each player writes a name in the squares they buy, at a set price per square.
  2. Draw the numbers. Once the grid is full, draw 0 through 9 at random for the row across the top and again for the column down the side, one team per axis.
  3. Pay each quarter. At the end of each quarter, take the last digit of each team's score. The square where those two digits meet wins that payout.

Auction Squares on BettorEdge

Stop drawing numbers out of a hat.

In classic squares, luck decides who gets 0 and 7. In Auction Squares on BettorEdge, players bid on the squares they want until bidding closes, so the best numbers go to whoever values them most, and squares can still change hands once the game starts.

Football squares FAQ

What are the best numbers in football squares?

For the final score in the NFL, 7 and 0 lead: home 7 and away 0 has hit in 3.5% of 3,835 games since 2012, and the reverse is close behind. The first quarter is far more lopsided: 0 and 0 hit 15.7% of the time at the end of Q1.

What are the worst squares to get?

Pairs of 2, 5, 8 and 9 rarely land, because football scores move in 3s and 7s. At the final whistle the least common NFL square has been home 2, away 2, at 0.08% of games.

How are football squares payouts usually split?

Most pools pay at the end of each quarter using the last digit of each team's score. A common split is 25% per quarter; another pays 20% for the first quarter, halftime and third quarter and 40% for the final. Agree on it before the numbers are drawn.

Do overtime points count?

In most pools the final score includes overtime, and the numbers on this page count it that way. Settle it in your pool's rules before kickoff.

What is Auction Squares?

A version of squares created by BettorEdge where players bid on the squares they want instead of a random draw deciding who holds the good numbers, and squares can still be traded once the game starts.
