Washington and Washington State (then Washington Agricultural College) first played on Thanksgiving Day 1900 in Seattle, and the game ended in a 5-5 tie.
From 1934 the schools competed for the Governor's Trophy, a bronze shield sculpted by Seattle artist Dudley Pratt and donated by Governor Clarence D. Martin, a UW alumnus.
In 1963 the Washington Apple Commission donated a new prize, the 'Big Apple Trophy', to highlight the state's status as the nation's top apple grower.
The trophy's nickname, the Apple Cup, stuck to the game itself. According to WSU's university archivist, the name was in popular use by 1967.

The 'Snow Bowl' in Pullman: Drew Bledsoe's 44-yard touchdown pass to Phillip Bobo, who slides into a snowbank, starts a 29-point third quarter in WSU's 42-23 win over No. 5 Washington.
- 2008
The so-called 'Crapple Cup' between 1-10 WSU and 0-10 UW: Nico Grasu's field goals at the end of regulation and in the second overtime give Washington State a 16-13 win.
- 2024
After Pac-12 realignment, the Apple Cup becomes a non-conference game for the first time in 63 years and moves to September. Washington State wins 24-19 at Lumen Field in Seattle.
- 2026
The 118th meeting is the first Apple Cup ever played as a season opener. No. 17 Washington wins 24-10 at Husky Stadium on Sunday, September 6.
