The Megaphone Trophy was introduced in 1949 by the alumni clubs of the two schools, and it is still jointly sponsored by the Notre Dame and Michigan State alumni clubs in Detroit.
The idea was simple: give the winner of an already heated Midwest series a physical prize, and record every result on the trophy itself.
The football series behind it is much older, dating to 1897, when Notre Dame beat Michigan State 34-6 in the first meeting.
Because every score is painted onto the megaphone, the rivalry has filled up two of them; the current trophy is the third.
After the teams stopped meeting annually following 2013 and last played in 2017, the trophy sat in South Bend until the series returned with a 2026-27 home-and-home.
