How the Vig Calculator works
What is the vig (juice)?
The vig, vigorish, or juice is the fee a sportsbook charges to take your bet. It is built into the odds, which is why both sides of a market add up to more than 100%. The vig is how the house wins over time, win or lose on any single bet.
How to calculate the vig
Add the implied probabilities of both sides; the amount over 100% is the vig. Standard -110 / -110 pricing carries about 4.8% vig. The calculator shows the figure and the fair, vig-free price for each side.
Vig vs. hold
The two terms overlap. Vig is the juice priced into the odds you see; hold is the share of total wagers the book expects to keep. Either way, it is margin working against you on every bet you place at a sportsbook.
How to beat the vig
You cannot out-bet a permanent built-in fee, you can only avoid it. Shopping for lower vig helps. Removing it entirely helps more: on BettorEdge you bet at market-fair prices with no house vig at all.
Frequently asked questions
What is a vig calculator?+
It measures the juice a sportsbook builds into a market by adding both sides' implied probabilities and showing how much they exceed 100%, then gives the fair no-vig odds.
What is the vig on -110 odds?+
Standard -110 / -110 pricing carries about 4.76% vig: both sides imply roughly 52.4%, for a total of about 104.76%. That same market is a 4.55% hold.
What is the difference between vig and hold?+
They measure the same margin two ways. Vig is how much the two prices exceed a fair 100% market: two -110 sides imply 52.38% each and sum to 104.76%, so the vig is 4.76%. Hold is that margin as a share of the total amount wagered, hold = vig / (1 + vig) = 4.76% / 104.76% = 4.55%. Vig is the bigger, price-based number; hold is the smaller, handle-based number the book actually keeps. Use this calculator for vig and the hold calculator for hold.
How do I calculate vig from decimal odds?+
Add 1 divided by each side's decimal odds. The amount over 1.0, expressed as a percentage, is the vig. The calculator handles American or decimal input.
How do I avoid paying the vig?+
Shop for lower-vig lines, or skip the house entirely. A peer-to-peer marketplace like BettorEdge has no built-in vig.
