Why arena totals run so high

Eight players a side on a 50-yard field is the headline, but the rebound nets do the quiet work. Each net section spans thirty feet wide and thirty-two feet high, and a ball that comes off one is live and in play. Passes that would be incomplete outdoors stay alive, so drives stall less often and possessions turn into points at a rate outdoor football never approaches. Bring an NFL total to an AF1 game and it will be wrong by a wide margin, which is exactly why the number deserves its own model. The scoring table

Two of these do not exist in outdoor football, and both matter to a total.

The Deuce is the one to internalize. A kickoff that sails through the uprights is worth two points, so a scoring event that is dead air in every other football code is a live source of points here. Drop kicks paying four do the same thing at the margin.

Where the edges hide

Rosters are small, so a single quarterback change is worth more here than an equivalent injury in a league carrying fifty-three players. The season is short at twelve games a team, which means small-sample records mislead badly in April and May and the market has less history to lean on than it does in the NFL. And because AF1 draws a fraction of the handle of the major leagues, the lines get less sharp money correcting them.
