The Carolina Panthers vs Arizona Cardinals Hall of Fame Game starts Thursday, August 6 at 8:00 PM ET (7:00 PM CT, 6:00 PM MT, 5:00 PM PT) at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. NBC carries the national broadcast and it streams on Peacock and NFL+. NBC has its Sunday Night Football crew on it, with Mike Tirico calling the game alongside Cris Collinsworth and Melissa Stark, which tells you how the network views the first live football of the year.
Arizona is the designated home team for this one even though nobody is at home. Canton is a neutral field roughly equidistant from nothing, a 23,000-seat stadium on the Hall of Fame campus, and the game exists as the opening act of enshrinement weekend rather than as a home date for either club. The game is officially presented by Novartis.
Why Canton matters this year for these two teams
The Hall of Fame Game usually has no connection to the class going in. This year it has two.
Larry Fitzgerald goes in on his first ballot. Arizona took him third overall in the 2004 draft and he never played for anyone else, finishing with 1,432 receptions for 17,492 yards, both of which rank second in NFL history. Add 121 touchdowns, 11 Pro Bowls, three All-Pro teams, nine 1,000-yard seasons and a place on the 2010s all-decade team. Randy Moss, an early influence on him, is his presenter.
Luke Kuechly goes in in his second year of eligibility, and his case is unusual because it rests on eight seasons rather than a long tail. Carolina took him ninth overall in 2012, he was Defensive Rookie of the Year, then Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, and he cleared 100 tackles in all eight of his NFL seasons, making him the fifth player since tackles were recorded to do that in eight straight years. Julius Peppers, his teammate in Carolina, presents him.
They are enshrined Saturday, August 8 at the same stadium, alongside Drew Brees, Roger Craig and Adam Vinatieri. A record 117 Hall of Famers are expected back on the Hall's campus for the week.
There is a neat piece of symmetry in it. The last time these two franchises met in the postseason was the NFC Championship Game on January 24, 2016 at Bank of America Stadium, when Fitzgerald's Cardinals ran into Kuechly's Panthers and lost 49-15. Cam Newton accounted for four touchdowns and Carolina forced six turnovers in what remains the most lopsided NFC title game since 2000. Ten years on, both men go into Canton in the same class, in the same week that their two clubs open the season on the same field.
Where the two teams actually stand
Carolina is the club with momentum, which is not a sentence anyone wrote about the Panthers for a long time. They went 8-9 in 2025 and that was enough to win the NFC South on a three-way tiebreaker over Atlanta and Tampa Bay, their first division title since 2015 and first playoff appearance since 2017. The season ended in the wild card round with a 34-31 loss to the Rams. Dave Canales returns for a third season, which by recent Carolina standards counts as continuity.
Arizona is starting over. The Cardinals went 3-14 in 2025, a franchise record for losses in a season, and finished last in the NFC West. Jonathan Gannon was fired on January 5, the day after the season ended, leaving with a 15-36 record across three years. Mike LaFleur was hired in February and Thursday night is the first game of his head coaching career.
The one genuinely elite piece Arizona kept is tight end Trey McBride, who caught 126 passes in 2025 for 1,239 yards and 11 touchdowns on 169 targets across all 17 games. That reception total is the NFL single-season record for a tight end, breaking the 116 that Zach Ertz posted in 2018, and it earned McBride first-team All-Pro honors. Whether he takes a snap in Canton is another matter, and no team announces that in advance.
The quarterbacks, as it has been reported
This is the part of a preseason preview where it pays to be precise about what is known versus assumed, because almost nothing about playing time is announced ahead of a Hall of Fame Game.
What has been reported: Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Kenny Pickett will start on Thursday, not Bryce Young, who remains the listed starter on Carolina's depth chart. Pickett, the former Steelers first-round pick, is Carolina's backup, and rookie Haynes King sits third on that depth chart.
On the other side, Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur confirmed that Carson Beck, Arizona's third-round pick in this year's draft, gets the start, despite being listed third on the team's first depth chart behind Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew II. LaFleur indicated all three quarterbacks will get reps against Carolina. Beck is 23 and arrives after five college seasons, completing 69.5% of his passes for 11,725 yards, 88 touchdowns and 32 interceptions at Georgia from 2021 to 2024 and then Miami in 2025.
What is not known: how long any of them plays. NFL.com's own preview notes that starters typically play little or not at all in this game, and that is the right way to hold it, as a tendency rather than a promise. Nobody has committed to a snap count, so treat any confident claim about second-half usage with suspicion, including your own.
Head to head
The two clubs last met in Week 2 of the 2025 regular season, on September 14 in Arizona, where the Cardinals won 27-22. Carolina had the ball late with a chance to take it and could not finish. Beyond that, the meaningful history is postseason: they have met three times in the playoffs and Carolina has won two, including the 49-15 NFC Championship rout in January 2016 described above.
For a preseason game, the honest read on head to head is that it tells you very little. Neither roster on Thursday will look much like the ones that played in September, and the coaching staff on one side is entirely new. It is context, not a signal.

Thin, and worth being straight about why. Six members got here first and all six asked for a bargain, so what is left is the other end of six bargains. That is the real trade-off on a peer-to-peer board: nobody hands you a house price, you get whatever your neighbours left behind, and two days before a preseason opener they have not left much. Arizona is also the nominal home team and has the more interesting quarterback story, with a third-round rookie getting a full first-team look and two veterans behind him. Against: this is a club coming off the worst season in its franchise history at 3-14, with a first-time head coach and a rookie starting quarterback who was third on the depth chart a week ago. Nothing about that profile argues for confidence, and -138 asks you to lay real money on it.
Under 35.5 at -101. For: the structural case for unders in the Hall of Fame Game is straightforward. It is the first live football of the year, played mostly by players who have not run an NFL offense together, with vanilla play calling, conservative game management and heavy clock burn in the second half. Sloppiness suppresses scoring more often than it inflates it. Against: sloppiness cuts the other way too. Turnovers off inexperienced quarterbacks create short fields, missed tackles by third-string defenses create long plays, and a single defensive score can put a low total in trouble in a hurry. At -101 you are being asked to call it essentially even money, and the open size here is $5, so this is a thin market rather than a considered consensus.
Arizona +1.5 at +108. For: taking points and plus money on the same ticket in a game the board already prices as a near coin flip is a defensible way to bet a game nobody can handicap confidently. Against: a 1.5-point cushion is close to meaningless in football, where almost nothing lands on a 1-point margin, so you are paying for very little protection and mostly just betting Arizona anyway.
