Mississippi A&M (today's Mississippi State) beat Ole Miss 13 straight times from 1911 through 1925, outscoring the Rebels 327-33 over that stretch.
When Ole Miss finally won 7-6 in Starkville in 1926, its fans ran onto the field and went for the goalposts. A&M fans fought them off with cane-bottom chairs, and the brawl went on until most of the chairs were broken.
To cool things down, Sigma Iota, an Ole Miss student honor society, proposed a trophy for the winner in 1927. A&M agreed, and Ole Miss gave final approval about two weeks before that year's game.
The first game for the Golden Egg was played on Thanksgiving Day 1927 in Oxford in front of about 14,000 fans, and Ole Miss won 20-12.
The official name is still the Battle for the Golden Egg. 'Egg Bowl' took hold in the late 1970s after Clarion-Ledger sports editor Tom Patterson had his staff run with the nickname.
