Notre Dame alumni in Northern California (the Notre Dame Club of the San Francisco Bay Area) created the trophy and presented it for the first time in 1989.
The first winner was Lou Holtz's Notre Dame team.
Its name looks back to the schools' first meeting, the 1925 Rose Bowl, a game packed with future legends: Knute Rockne and the Four Horsemen for Notre Dame, and Pop Warner and Ernie Nevers for Stanford.
The materials were chosen to represent both schools, with Irish crystal for the Fighting Irish and California redwood for Stanford.
The winner keeps the trophy until the next meeting, when it is handed straight to the winning coach and team.
