They pushed out Kurt Kitayama, Rickie Fowler and Bud Cauley, who dropped to 31st, 33rd and 34th. Six men are here for the first time: Kristoffer Reitan, Alex Fitzpatrick, Ryan Gerard, Min Woo Lee, Alex Smalley and Ryan Fox. Alex Fitzpatrick made it at 24th, in the same field as his brother Matt at second, four months after the pair won the Zurich Classic together.
One more piece of context. The PGA Tour confirmed in June that the finale moves to rotating venues in 2028 under a reworked, match-play postseason. East Lake hosts in 2026 and 2027, so this is one of the last two stroke-play Tour Championships the club will hold on an annual basis.
The course: East Lake after the restoration
East Lake plays as a par 70 at 7,440 yards, and it is not the course people remember from a decade ago. Andrew Green's roughly $30 million restoration, built off previously unknown 1949 aerial photography, pulled the Donald Ross property back toward its original intent and debuted at the 2024 finale. There are now 29 acres of fairway, up from 24 in 2023, rough cut back from 90 acres to 70, 78 bunkers covering roughly 76,000 square feet, and water in play on eight holes rather than six.
Wider fairways do not mean easier. The setup runs TifEagle Bermuda greens at about 13.5 feet on the stimpmeter over zoysia fairways, with primary rough near three and a half inches. The 14th is a par 4 again at 530 yards, and the agronomy team has taken more fairway out of the 17th while expanding closely mown zoysia surrounds around the 3rd, 7th, 12th, 15th and 17th greens. Shaved collection areas next to greens that fast punish a marginal miss harder than thick rough does, because the ball keeps going.
The par-70 routing shapes the whole betting profile. There are only two par 5s, the 525-yard 6th and the 585-yard 18th, against four par 3s and twelve par 4s, several of them enormous: the opener is 510 yards, the 7th is 495, the 14th is 530. The par-3 9th measures 260 yards downhill with sand flanking a long green, a hole that was originally East Lake's 18th. The 15th is a 215-yard par 3 to a quasi-island, heart-shaped green. Add it up and the course hands out very few free birdies and asks for long iron after long iron. Ball-strikers, not birdie-makers.
The scoring backs that up. Tommy Fleetwood won last year at 18 under par, 262, closing with a 68 to beat Russell Henley and Patrick Cantlay by three. The field averaged 67.818 as a par 70 in 2025 against 68.618 in 2024, when the 14th played as a par 5. The 72-hole course record is still Tiger Woods's 257 from 2007.
Weather: warm, still, and wet at the front end
The National Weather Service forecast for East Lake has Thursday around 90 degrees with showers and thunderstorms likely and a 72 percent chance of precipitation, Friday near 89 with a 71 percent chance, then a clearer weekend around 88 on Saturday and 90 on Sunday with storm chances in the mid-20s. Wind is close to nothing all four days, forecast at zero to five miles per hour.
Soft and calm turns a long par 70 into a target course. If Thursday and Friday deliver the rain that is forecast, receptive greens and no breeze push the winning number lower and reward the players who can carry it. The flip side is delay risk early in the week, which compresses the schedule and matters for anything tied to a specific round.
Contenders to watch at the TOUR Championship
Scottie Scheffler: the best East Lake record in the field, and a health question
Scheffler arrives as FedExCup No. 1 for the fifth season in a row after two wins in 2026, the American Express in January and the FedEx St. Jude Championship on August 16. That second one was a statement: 17 under, 263, an eight-shot victory that was the largest winning margin in that event's 68-year history at TPC Southwind, and his 21st career PGA Tour title at 30 years old.
