Georgia and Georgia Tech first played on November 4, 1893, in Athens, and Tech won 28-6.
Tech's star that day was Leonard Wood, a 33-year-old Army surgeon stationed at Fort McPherson who had enrolled at Tech. He later became Army Chief of Staff.
After the loss, angry Georgia fans chased the Tech players through Athens with rocks, and the team escaped on a departing train. The bitterness of that first game shaped the rivalry that became known as 'Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.'
Georgia athletics says the winner has received the Governor's Cup Trophy every year since 1995.

The 2024 game went eight overtimes. Only the nine-overtime Illinois-Penn State game in 2021 has gone longer in FBS history.
Georgia doesn't count its 1943 and 1944 losses to Tech because Tech's wartime teams used players from a Navy officer training program on campus. As a result, the two schools' official records for the series differ.
Leonard Wood, who led Tech to its first win in 1893, went on to command alongside Theodore Roosevelt in the Rough Riders and later served as Army Chief of Staff.
