Virginia and Virginia Tech first played in 1895, but they went more than a century without a dedicated football trophy.
The two universities created the Commonwealth Cup in 1996 so the winner of the in-state game would keep a physical prize for the year.
Virginia Tech claimed the Cup first by beating Virginia at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg in 1996.
The trophy was produced by Jostens and records the score of every game in the rivalry on its sides.
The football Cup is separate from the Commonwealth Clash, a multi-sport points competition between the two schools that has its own trophy.
