Former Arkansas linebacker David Bazzel (1981-85) came up with the trophy in 1996 and pitched it to Arkansas athletic director Frank Boyles with a scaled cardboard cutout of the boot.
Arkansas and LSU each put in $5,000, and the $10,000 project went to a jeweler in Boston.
Bazzel said he wanted the trophy as big and gaudy as possible, betting that gold and sheer size would make it valuable to both programs.
The boot shape comes from putting the map outlines of the two neighboring states together, and LSU won the first Golden Boot game, 17-7, in Little Rock in 1996.
