In 1959 Oregon officials asked art student Warren Spady to carve a trophy for the Oregon-Oregon State game, and he had only about a month to finish it; he turned it in with the feet not fully sculpted.
The platypus was awarded after the 1959, 1960 and 1961 games, then vanished amid student thefts and was forgotten for decades.
Spady spotted it in 1986 in a display case at Oregon's Leighton Pool, where it had been repurposed as a water polo trophy with a plaque for Oregon water polo wins.
After Oregonian columnist John Canzano lamented in 2004 that the rivalry had no trophy, Spady contacted him, and Oregon administrator Dan Williams led a search that turned the platypus up in university storage around 2005.
Since the 2007 game, the trophy has gone to the winning school's alumni association rather than the team; neither athletic department officially recognizes it, it is not presented on the field, and the alumni directors hand it off between campuses.

Platypus Trophy facts worth knowing
The trophy still carries a plaque labeling it a "Platypus Water Polo Champion" from the years Oregon's water polo team claimed it.
